About Bitcoin Cash
Bitcoin Cash is a hard fork of Bitcoin with a protocol upgrade to fix on-chain capacity. Bitcoin Cash intends to be a Bitcoin without Segregated Witness (SegWit) as soft fork, where upgrades of the protocol are done mainly through hard forks and without changing the original economic rules of the Bitcoin.
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is released on 1st August 2017 as an upgraded version of the original Bitcoin Core software. The main upgrade is the increase in the block size limit from 1MB to 8MB. This effectively allows miners on the BCH chain to process up to 8 times more payments per second in comparison to Bitcoin. This makes for faster, cheaper transactions and a much smoother user experience.
Why was Bitcoin Cash Created?
The main objective of Bitcoin Cash is to to bring back the essential qualities of money inherent in the original Bitcoin software. Over the years, these qualities were filtered out of Bitcoin Core and progress was stifled by various people, organizations, and companies involved in Bitcoin protocol development. The result is that Bitcoin Core is currently unusable as money due to increasingly high fees per transactions and transfer times taking hours to complete. This is all because of the 1MB limitation of Bitcoin Core’s block size, causing it unable to accommodate to large number of transactions.
Essentially Bitcoin Cash is a community-activated upgrade (otherwise known as a hard fork) of Bitcoin that increased the block size to 8MB, solving the scaling issues that plague Bitcoin Core today.
Nov 16th 2018: A hashwar resulted in a split between Bitcoin SV and Bitcoin ABC
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a 2017 fork of Bitcoin created to keep blocks larger and transactions cheaper, pursuing 'peer-to-peer electronic cash' rather than digital gold. It shares Bitcoin's 21 million supply cap and Proof-of-Work design, but consistently trails it in price, hash rate and adoption.
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) exists because of a civil war over how Bitcoin should scale. In 2017, one camp wanted small blocks plus second-layer solutions (the bitcoin we know today); the other wanted bigger blocks on the base chain for cheap everyday payments. The big-blockers forked, and BCH was born.
Every BTC holder on 1 August 2017 received an equal amount of BCH — which is why many Australians first encountered it as an unexpected balance on an exchange account.
What Is Bitcoin Cash?
BCH is a Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency that shares Bitcoin's code lineage, 21 million supply cap, halving schedule and 10-minute block target — diverging mainly in block size (far larger than Bitcoin's, allowing many more transactions per block) and a different difficulty-adjustment mechanism.
Its stated goal is usable peer-to-peer cash: low fees and reliable confirmation for payments, rather than a store-of-value narrative.
How Does Bitcoin Cash Work?
BCH's mechanics mirror Bitcoin's: miners compete to produce SHA-256 blocks, transactions are secured by the chain's cumulative work, and issuance halves roughly every four years.
The crucial differences are bigger blocks (cheaper, less congested transfers at low usage) and an emergency difficulty adjustment designed to keep mining viable when hash rate migrates between BTC and BCH, which share the same mining algorithm.
History of Bitcoin Cash
Bitcoin Cash forked from Bitcoin on 1 August 2017 after years of the “block size war”. Key figures included Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin investor who became BCH's most public advocate.
The BCH camp itself split in November 2018 (creating Bitcoin SV), and saw another small split in 2020. BCH has never regained its launch-era relative strength against BTC, but it has kept a significant user base, merchant acceptance tools, and periodic rally cycles.
Tokenomics
BCH mirrors Bitcoin's monetary policy exactly: a 21 million maximum supply, new issuance as block rewards, and quadrennial halvings on the same schedule since both began at block 0's schedule.
Live BCH supply and market-cap data are shown above.
Buying Bitcoin Cash in Australia
BCH is widely available on AUSTRAC-registered exchanges with AUD deposits via PayID or bank transfer, sitting in the top bracket of tradable assets.
As always, CGT applies on disposal — including any use of BCH for payments, which is a taxable event in Australia.
Risks
The structural risk: BCH competes in a lane Bitcoin price-wise dominates and stablecoins utility-wise dominate. It competes for SHA-256 hash rate with a much bigger chain, making its security budget a fraction of Bitcoin's, and its narrative relevance has faded with Layer-2 progress on BTC.
That said, it is liquid, long-lived and follows Bitcoin's rhythm — expect high volatility either way. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bitcoin Cash the same as Bitcoin?
No — BCH is a separate cryptocurrency created by forking Bitcoin in 2017. They share history up to that point and similar mechanics (21M cap, halvings), but trade independently on different chains.
If I owned Bitcoin before August 2017, do I own BCH?
In principle, yes: the fork duplicated balances. Accessing old BCH requires the original keys; for exchange-held BTC of that era, whether BCH was credited depended on the platform.
Why did Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin?
A years-long dispute over scaling: the BCH camp wanted larger blocks for cheap on-chain payments; the BTC consensus favoured small blocks plus Layer-2 scaling.
What is Bitcoin SV?
A 2018 fork of Bitcoin Cash by a faction wanting even larger blocks and a different governance approach — a third, separate asset.
Bitcoin Cash is crypto's most instructive fork: same DNA, same monetary policy, radically different market outcome. It remains functional, cheap and liquid — a bet on the payments thesis that Bitcoin proper abandoned — and investors should be clear-eyed that history has so far voted against that thesis.
