    About Chainlink

Chainlink is the industry-standard decentralized oracle network that solves the "oracle problem" by connecting smart contracts with real-world data. Blockchains cannot access external information on their own, so Chainlink acts as a secure bridge, enabling smart contracts to react to real-world events using verified, tamper-proof data. It is widely considered one of the first decentralized oracle networks and is the market leader in bringing off-chain data on-chain.

The platform operates through a decentralized network of nodes that fetch, validate, and deliver data to smart contracts. When a contract requests information like a stock price, a committee of independent nodes retrieves and aggregates the data to reach consensus, then delivers a single trustworthy answer. Chainlink offers a suite of services including Data Feeds for asset prices, CCIP for cross-chain token transfers and messaging, Automation for triggering smart contract functions, and Proof of Reserve for verifying asset collateralization.

Chainlink has established itself as critical infrastructure for both DeFi and institutional adoption, with partnerships including Swift, Euroclear, Mastercard, UBS, ANZ, Fidelity International, and J.P. Morgan. Its institutional products include the Chainlink Runtime Environment for tokenized asset workflows, Confidential Compute for privacy-preserving computation, and the Automated Compliance Engine for embedding regulatory rules into smart contracts.

The LINK token is the native asset used to pay node operators for services, fund subscription accounts, and incentivize network security through staking. Node operators stake LINK as collateral, which can be slashed if they provide inaccurate data. Chainlink was co-founded in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, who co-authored the white paper with Ari Juels, and raised $32 million in its September 2017 ICO.

Chainlink (LINK) is the leading decentralised oracle network — the infrastructure that feeds real-world data (prices, events) into smart contracts. Most major DeFi protocols rely on Chainlink price feeds, making LINK a bet on the plumbing of on-chain finance.

Chainlink (LINK) solves a subtle but critical problem: blockchains can't see the outside world. A smart contract can't natively know the price of ETH, the weather, or interest rates — Chainlink provides that data through a decentralised network of independent node operators.

Because most of DeFi depends on accurate price feeds to function safely, Chainlink has become core market infrastructure: a kind of picks-and-shovels asset for the smart-contract economy.

    What Is Chainlink?

Chainlink is a decentralised oracle network. “Oracles” are services that bring off-chain data (asset prices, FX rates, proof of reserves) onto blockchains, or let blockchains interact with external systems.

LINK is the network's token: node operators are paid in LINK for providing data services, and LINK is staked as economic security backing that data's accuracy. Chainlink also operates CCIP, a cross-chain messaging protocol used to move value and instructions between blockchains.

    How Does Chainlink Work?

Rather than one source of truth, Chainlink aggregates data from many independent oracles and data providers; outliers are discarded and the aggregate answer is written on-chain. This decentralisation is what makes manipulation economically difficult.

Data requests consume LINK, and the network has introduced staking so LINK holders can commit tokens to back the integrity of oracle services, earning rewards for good performance. Chainlink is blockchain-agnostic — it serves Ethereum, Solana, and many other networks.

    History of Chainlink

Chainlink was founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, with the LINK token distributed in a 2017 ICO and the network going live in 2019.

Milestones include its rapid adoption as DeFi's dominant price feed in 2020–21, the launch of staking in 2022–23, CCIP (cross-chain protocol) going live, and large-scale institutional pilots with traditional financial market infrastructure.

    Tokenomics

LINK has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. A large share was set aside for node-operator incentives and the development company; those unlocks have been distributed progressively since launch.

LINK's value case is usage-driven: more data consumed by smart contracts means more LINK demand for payments and staking. Live supply and market cap are shown above.

    Buying Chainlink in Australia

LINK is widely listed on AUSTRAC-registered exchanges and purchasable with AUD via PayID or bank transfer.

CGT rules apply as usual; rewards earned from LINK staking would generally be assessable income when received.

    Risks

LINK's risks are those of infrastructure dependence: if DeFi activity contracts, oracle demand falls; competing oracle designs (or chains' native solutions) could erode market share; and token-price linkage to network usage is less direct than for L1 assets.

Volatility is high, and large historical token allocations to the team/company have at times drawn supply-overhang criticism. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What problem does Chainlink solve?

Blockchains are sealed systems that can't access real-world data. Chainlink's decentralised oracles reliably put that data (prices, rates, events) on-chain so smart contracts can do useful things like liquidate under-collateralised loans.

Does Chainlink have its own blockchain?

No — Chainlink is an oracle network that runs on top of many blockchains. LINK exists as a token on Ethereum and serves all connected chains.

What is the LINK token used for?

Paying node operators for data services, and staking as economic security behind data accuracy.

Is there a maximum supply of LINK?

Yes — 1 billion LINK, fixed.

Chainlink is one of crypto's most unglamorous and most important assets: dominant, battle-tested infrastructure that everything else quietly depends on. Its investment case rides on the growth of on-chain finance as a whole, rather than any single application.
