About Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid is a layer one (L1) blockchain best known for perpetual futures and spot trading. Beyond its flagship DEX trading platform, the ecosystem supports borrowing, lending, real world assets (RWAs), and a full-fledged Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), making it a leading force in decentralized finance (defi).
Just as electronic trading dramatically improved markets in the 2000s, Hyperliquid offers an opportunity for a massive technical upgrade of the existing financial system through a transparent, efficient, and resilient blockchain. HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain, with a maximum supply of 1 billion.
Hyperliquid is a decentralised perpetual-futures exchange running on its own high-performance Layer-1 blockchain. Its HYPE token launched in late 2024 via a community airdrop and captures value through exchange fee flows. Hyperliquid has quickly become one of the most-used venues for on-chain derivatives trading.
Hyperliquid (HYPE) is one of crypto's fastest-rising platforms: a fully on-chain perpetuals exchange that delivers a centralised-exchange-style experience — fast order matching, low latency, deep liquidity — while keeping custody with the user.
The project runs its own Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for trading, and its HYPE token, distributed via a large community airdrop, rallied strongly after launch. Note for readers: this page tracks the HYPE token, not any individual product on the exchange.
What Is Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid is a decentralised exchange (DEX) specialising in perpetual futures — leveraged derivatives that track an asset's price without expiry. Users connect a wallet, deposit collateral (typically USDC) and trade spot or perps without handing funds to a centralised broker.
HYPE is the ecosystem's native token. It is used for staking and network security, participates in governance, and benefits from the exchange's fee flows via mechanisms that direct a large share of revenue to HYPE-related buybacks and reserves.
How Does Hyperliquid Work?
Hyperliquid operates its own Layer-1 blockchain (Hyperliquid L1) using a high-performance Proof-of-Stake design with an on-chain order book — unusual for DEXs, which more often use automated market makers. All orders, cancels and liquidations execute on-chain.
The “Assistance Fund” collects a significant share of trading fees and uses them for HYPE purchases, creating a structural link between exchange volume and token demand. The HyperEVM environment extends the chain to general smart contracts.
History of Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid launched in 2023, founded by Jeff Yan and team. It grew rapidly by offering an on-chain perp experience comparable to centralised exchanges, filling a gap after the collapse of FTX eroded trust in centralised venues.
In November 2024 the project airdropped HYPE to its users — one of the most valuable community distributions in crypto history — without venture-capital allocations. The token subsequently rose into the top-20 by market cap, and Hyperliquid continued to gain derivatives market share.
Tokenomics
HYPE has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The genesis distribution emphasised the user community and ecosystem development over private investors, and a substantial allocation is reserved for future emissions and community incentives.
Because fee revenue is routed to HYPE-buying mechanisms (the Assistance Fund), exchange activity is a real driver of token demand — which cuts both ways in slower markets. Live supply and market data are shown above.
Buying Hyperliquid in Australia
HYPE is primarily traded natively on the Hyperliquid exchange itself (deposit USDC on the platform to trade the HYPE/USDC spot pair). Availability on mainstream Australian exchanges may be limited or absent, so using the DEX typically requires comfort with self-custody wallets and on-chain transfers.
The ATO's CGT rules apply to HYPE as to any crypto. Airdropped tokens and trading P&L can both have tax consequences — keep detailed records.
Risks
Hyperliquid is young and carries elevated risk: a concentrated validator set, a short operating history, and dependence on continued derivatives volume. The platform itself has faced security incidents and bridge-related attacks in its ecosystem.
HYPE's link to fee flows means it can fall sharply when trading volumes dry up. Derivatives trading also attracts regulatory attention globally. High-beta, high-growth assets like HYPE can experience severe drawdowns — never invest more than you can afford to lose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hyperliquid a blockchain or an exchange?
Both: Hyperliquid runs a dedicated Layer-1 blockchain whose flagship application is a fully on-chain perpetuals exchange, later extended to general smart contracts via HyperEVM.
How did most people get HYPE originally?
Via a November 2024 airdrop to users of the Hyperliquid platform — one of the largest community distributions in crypto history, with no venture-capital allocation.
What drives the HYPE token's value?
Staking/security utility, governance, and the fact that a large share of the exchange's trading fees are routed to HYPE purchases through the Assistance Fund.
Can Australians buy HYPE with AUD directly?
Generally not. The common path is to buy USDC with AUD on an AUSTRAC-registered exchange, transfer it to Hyperliquid, and trade the HYPE/USDC pair on the platform.
Hyperliquid is a new-generation crypto success story: fast product-market fit, a community-first token launch, and real fee revenue flowing to tokenholders. It's also a young, concentrated, high-beta platform asset — the definition of a high-risk position. Understand the model before you size in, and never invest more than you can afford to lose.
