About Uniswap
UNI is the governance token for Uniswap, an Automated Market Marker DEX on the Ethereum blockchain. The UNI token allows token holders to participate in the governance of the protocol. Key decisions such as usage of the treasury or future upgrades can be decided through a governance vote.
Uniswap (UNI) is the largest decentralised exchange (DEX) — automated software on Ethereum and other chains that lets anyone trade tokens directly from their wallet. UNI is its governance token, giving holders control over the protocol's future, including the long-debated question of directing fees to token holders.
Uniswap is to crypto trading what open-source protocols are to the internet: an automated, always-on exchange where any token can be traded without an account, order book or intermediary. Tens of billions of dollars move through it in busiest periods.
The UNI token launched in 2020 via one of crypto's most famous airdrops — 400 tokens to every wallet that had used the protocol. It gives holders governance over the protocol but, so far, no direct share of trading fees.
What Is Uniswap?
Uniswap is a decentralised exchange (DEX) built on the automated market maker (AMM) model, where prices are set by liquidity pools — pairs of tokens locked in smart contracts — rather than buyer/seller order books.
Anyone can swap tokens, provide liquidity to earn fees, or list a new token. UNI is the governance token: holders vote on protocol upgrades and treasury spending.
How Does Uniswap Work?
In an AMM pool, the price is determined by the ratio of tokens in the pool: buying ETH with USDC raises the price mechanically as the pool's balance shifts (the constant-product formula, x × y = k). Liquidity providers earn a share of every trade's fee.
Later versions (v3 and v4) made liquidity far more capital-efficient by letting providers concentrate funds in chosen price ranges, and added a hook system for custom pool logic. Uniswap operates across Ethereum mainnet and multiple Layer-2 networks.
History of Uniswap
Uniswap was built by Hayden Adams and launched in November 2018, inspired by an Ethereum Foundation post describing the AMM concept. v2 (2020) added token-to-token pools; the UNI governance token launched in September 2020 via retroactive airdrop.
v3 (2021) introduced concentrated liquidity; v4 (early 2025) added hooks. A 2024 Wells notice from the US SEC targeted Uniswap Labs; the SEC closed its investigation in 2025 without action.
Tokenomics
UNI has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The genesis allocation split between the community (including airdrop), team, investors and advisors, with multi-year vesting.
The protocol historically routed all trading fees to liquidity providers; activating a “fee switch” to share revenue with UNI stakers has been governance's most-debated question. Whether and how value flows to UNI holders is the single biggest variable in the token's investment case. Live supply and market cap above.
Buying Uniswap in Australia
UNI is listed on AUSTRAC-registered exchanges and can be bought with AUD via PayID or bank transfer. Australians who use the Uniswap protocol itself should know that each on-chain swap is a CGT disposal for tax purposes.
DEX trading requires a self-custody wallet and exposes you to smart-contract and phishing risks distinct from exchange trading.
Risks
UNI's central uncertainty is value capture: governance power without guaranteed fee flow makes its valuation depend heavily on future token-holder mechanisms. Competition from other DEXs and aggregators is intense.
Regulatory risk historically shadowed Uniswap Labs (though the SEC investigation closed without action in 2025), and protocol exploits — though the core contracts have been robust — remain a tail risk across the DeFi stack it anchors. Standard volatility warnings apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does holding UNI earn me a share of Uniswap's trading fees?
Not directly, to date — fees currently go to liquidity providers. A governance proposal known as the 'fee switch' could direct a share to UNI participants, and has long been the token's central debate.
What is the difference between Uniswap and CoinSpot/Swyftx?
Uniswap is software — a decentralised exchange you use with a self-custody wallet; CoinSpot/Swyftx are Australian companies (CEXs) that hold AUD on-ramps and require accounts. Uniswap has no AUD deposits and no accounts.
What was the UNI airdrop?
In September 2020, Uniswap gave 400 UNI to every address that had used the protocol — about $1,200 worth at the time, and far more at the 2021 peak.
Is there a maximum UNI supply?
Yes — 1 billion UNI, fully specified at launch with multi-year vesting.
Uniswap is essential crypto infrastructure with a governance token whose economics are still being negotiated. The bull case is dominant DEX volume eventually accruing value to UNI; the bear case is that governance rights alone never justify the price. That decision is the investment.
