USD1 is a fiat-backed US dollar stablecoin launched in 2025 by World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture affiliated with the family of US President Donald Trump. Reserves are custodied by BitGo and held in short-term US Treasuries, dollar deposits and cash equivalents. Its rapid rise has been shadowed by political-conflict concerns.

USD1 is among the most politically conspicuous stablecoins ever launched: a dollar-pegged token issued by World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the crypto venture publicly associated with the Trump family, launched in 2025 and quickly reaching top-tier scale.

Setting politics aside, the structure is conventional — fiat-backed, institutional custody, short-duration reserves — putting USD1 closer to USDC than to experimental designs.

    What Is USD1?

USD1 is a 1:1 US-dollar-backed stablecoin. World Liberty Financial is the issuer; custody of reserves is provided by BitGo, with backing reported as short-term US government Treasuries, US dollar deposits and other cash equivalents.

The token exists on multiple chains (launching on Ethereum and BNB Chain), aiming at settlement, payments and institutional DeFi usage.

    How Does USD1 Work?

USD1 follows the classic fiat-backed model: dollars and safe assets in; stablecoins out. Authorised participants mint and redeem through the issuer; retail users buy and sell on exchanges, with arbitrage maintaining the $1 peg.

Because World Liberty Financial is politically affiliated, USD1's governance and treasury decisions receive an unusual degree of public and regulatory attention, which cuts both ways for holders.

    History of USD1

World Liberty Financial emerged in 2024 as a Trump-family-affiliated DeFi venture. USD1 launched in March 2025 and scaled very rapidly into the top tier of stablecoins by circulating supply, helped by headline institutional usage (including a large Abu-Dhabi-linked settlement transaction) and listings on major exchanges.

The venture has sustained ongoing public controversy around presidential conflicts of interest — a fact of the asset that investors should weigh as governance risk rather than as a valuation footnote.

    Tokenomics

USD1 has no fixed cap: supply expands and contracts with mint/redemption demand, like other fiat-backed stablecoins. There is no yield to holders; WLFI captures the economics of reserves.

Live supply and market cap are shown above.

    Buying USD1 in Australia

Direct AUD pairs for USD1 on Australian exchanges are limited; the common path is buying a major asset with AUD and swapping to USD1 on supporting exchanges or on-chain. Check listings before planning around it.

ATO CGT treatment applies as it does for any stablecoin on disposal.

    Risks

USD1's distinctive risks are governance and reputational (the issuer's political affiliation raises specific conflict and policy risks), plus the newer-issuer reserve-confidence risk that any young stablecoin carries.

Generic risks apply too: peg stress, custody (BitGo) reliance, and regulatory change. Not government-guaranteed; not deposit-insured. Never treat it as a bank balance.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who issues USD1?

World Liberty Financial — a crypto venture affiliated with the family of US President Donald Trump — with reserves custodied by BitGo.

    What backs USD1?

Short-term US government Treasuries, US dollar deposits and other cash equivalents, per the issuer's disclosures.

    Is USD1 available in Australia?

Mostly via swaps on international exchanges or on-chain rather than direct AUD purchases; check your exchange's current listings.

    Is USD1 different from WLFI?

Yes — USD1 is the stablecoin; WLFI is the separate governance token of the World Liberty Financial platform.

USD1 is a structurally ordinary fiat-backed stablecoin with an extraordinary governance backdrop. For Australian holders, the relevant judgements are the usual ones — reserves, custody, exchange access — plus one unique one: how comfortable you are holding an asset whose fortunes are entangled with a political brand.
